Student self-portraits to hang in President’s corridor

art 1

A watch. A flag. A favourite teddy bear.

The items found in these self-portraits are as unique as the student-artists themselves.

And that, of course, was exactly the point of Sally McKay’s assignment: to get the students in her first-year ART 1UI3 course, who hail from all faculties, to use drawing as a tool for self-expression, individual perception and self-awareness.

The students were tasked with drawing a self-portrait that included a meaningful object that conveyed something about themselves. They had to use a mirror rather than a photograph, to help better understand the subtle changes in their art.

The portraits will be unveiled in their new home in the corridor outside the President’s Office in Gilmour Hall on January 25 at 3 p.m.

The works will be on display until February 26.
