A new Public Health campaign will encourage Hamilton’s students to think about how alcohol use affects their social relationships.

Got Your Back, developed by the City of Hamilton’s Public Health Services department in collaboration with McMaster University and Mohawk College, will harness the power of social media to teach students about responsible drinking.

The six-week campaign will be delivered through four characters who embody behaviours often associated with drinking.

The goal is to spread information about things like standard drink sizes, recommended daily limits, safe partying and how to help a friend who has had too much to drink.

Students will be encouraged to engage with the Got Your Back campaign through Facebook and Twitter, as well as at weekly on-campus campaign booths.

They can also track down hidden items as part of a contest associated with the campaign.

“There’s a lot of misinformation out there about alcohol, but the feedback we’ve received is that students don’t want to be told what to do,” says Pearl Mendonca, wellness education coordinator with McMaster’s Student Wellness Centre. “That’s why social media plays such a big part in this campaign. It allows peers to help each other learn about responsible drinking.”

You can interact with the campaign on both Facebook and Twitter.
