Local residents, students and scholars recently gathered for the kick-off of the Action Research Commons Hamilton,  known as The ARCH, a new McMaster initiative meant to help build capacity for community-engaged research in Hamilton.

Located at Kenilworth Avenue and Main Street East, The ARCH is a collaborative work and meeting space for students, scholars, area residents and others interested in, or currently conducting, community-based research in Hamilton.

The ARCH, created in partnership with the McMaster School of Graduate Studies and Homestead Christian Care, is open to all Faculties, departments, individuals and agencies engaged in community-based research.

“This is intended to be a welcoming, inclusive space,” says Allison Sekuler, Associate Vice-President and Dean of Graduate Studies. “We hope that The ARCH will provide both scholars and community members with an opportunity to engage with and learn from each other and that it will help to nurture relationships that deepen and enhance community-engaged scholarship in Hamilton.”fwi

The ARCH provides no-cost bookable space to researchers conducting interviews, focus groups and other meetings, as well as an area where researchers can meet with community members to exchange resources related to community-based scholarship.

The initiative builds on a Forward with Integrity project, the “Think Tank on Campus-Community Engaged Scholarship,” which explored current community engagement activities and looked at ways for the University and the community to work together effectively.
