It’s a good time to be a McMaster student and alumni. Recently recognized as a top 100 university by both the Shanghai Jiao Tong Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) and the Times Higher Education’s influential World University Rankings, McMaster University has become a leader in sparking ideas and fostering talent.

As the fall recruitment season begins, prospects for students and alumni continue to grow. Between the Fall Career Fair, which hosts over 110 employer booths, the Hamilton Employment Crawl, and Company Recruitment Events, where employers meet with a smaller group of students to discuss opportunities, McMaster University will host over 150 employers looking to hire.

“Recruitment events are great opportunities for students and alumni to connect with hiring managers and company representatives,” says Gisela Oliveira, Associate Director of Careers and Employment for the Student Success Centre. “By attending these events, candidates learn about what the workforce has to offer and the value of their skills and experiences in the labour market. Candidates need to be ready to make a lasting first impression and step 1 is to put a face to their resume.”

The Student Success Centre has many opportunities for students and recent alumni looking to prepare their resumes, cover letters, interview skills, and overall job search strategies. In addition to regular workshops and drop-ins, the Student Success Centre will hold a Resume Blitz in MUSC Marketplace on Tuesday, September 19, 2017, two days prior to the Fall Career Fair. Those who attend can bring a copy of their resume to be critiqued by career experts, and can even print their resume on-site; they will also have the opportunity to update their LinkedIn headshot.

On Wednesday, September 20, 2017, students and recent alumni will also have the opportunity to attend a Career Fair Prep workshop. This workshop will be an opportunity for attendees to be more strategic about organizations they wish to approach at the fair, as well as tips for standing out; it is especially recommended for those who are looking to develop their job search strategies.

For many, Career Fair is an opportunity to secure a job after graduation. As one alumni from the Class of 2016 shared, “At Career Fair, I tailored my story to how my interests and skills fit with the company and its culture. Once we became a connection on LinkedIn, I sent a message thanking for their time at the fair and again reminding them of my interest in the company. When a suitable opportunity became available, I was offered an interview and successfully secured a job at my desired company.”

While the Fall Career Fair is the largest career event taking place at McMaster University this year, there are many professional opportunities during recruitment season. For students and alumni interested in learning more about finding a job or co-op opportunity in Hamilton, the Hamilton Employment Crawl taking place during Fall Reading Break will offer industry tours related to the Health/Life Sciences, Information Technology, and Manufacturing, as well as a social event at Serve Ping Pong, where attendees can interact with employers in a more casual way. There are also over 20 externship opportunities available for students who are looking for a job shadow experience in a field of-interest for two days of the Fall Reading Break, with available positions ranging from secondary school teacher to events specialist.

Company Recruitment Events are also a targeted way for students to secure a co-op or full-time job position. Employers interested in McMaster students specify the Faculties and/or skill-sets they need and host an event about opportunities. These events are a great way for students to hear directly from the employer about keywords to include in their resumes, how to prepare for an interview at their organization and oftentimes, an exchange of contact information for students to keep in touch and build a professional connection with an employer in that particular company.

Regardless of where a student or recent alumni may be in their job search, one message remains clear: McMaster University is here to support that process. Whether it’s attending a workshop, exploring job postings on OSCARplus, attending an event, or stopping by the Student Success Centre or a Faculty career office during drop-in hours, McMaster is here to foster talent and potential during and after a student’s time here.

The Fall Career Fair will take place on Thursday, September 21, 2017. For a list of employers, visit the Student Success Centre’s website.
