Students won't be in the UN's General Assembly Hall, above, but that doesn't mean the topics they'll tackle this weekend are any less important. Delegates will discuss climate change, poverty and more at this weekend's model UN conference.

Hundreds of students will get a taste of real-life international relations this weekend at the University’s first model United Nations conference.

Organized as part of the Perspectives on Peace campaign, the weekend-long event will see delegates debate issues and negotiate agreements on behalf of one of the UN’s 193 member countries.

Student-diplomats will tackle topics such as eradicating poverty, slowing climate change and fighting inequality and injustice.

Lloyd Axworthy, who served as Canada’s Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1996 to 2000, will address the students Friday night.

Axworthy was President of the United Nations Security Council in 1999 and 2000, and in 1997 was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize for his work on banning land mines.
