Nobel Peace Prize laureate to speak on landmines

A military engineer and co-Nobel Peace Prize laureate who worked closely with Princess Diana on the banning of landmines is speaking at McMaster University this week. Rae McGrath will discuss post-conflict rehabilitation, landmine clearance, and how engineering can assist rehabilitation in a practical, community-focused way. He will also present slides and scenarios from his work in post-conflict situations.

McGrath is a co-founder of the International Campaign to Ban Landmines (ICBL), the founder of the NGO Mines Advisory Group, and a military expert in clearing unexploded mines and ordinance. He worked closely with Princess Diana on the banning of landmines and delivered the Nobel Peace Prize lecture in 1997.

The lecture is on Wednesday, January 19 at 5:30 p.m. in Room 1A4 of the Ewart Angus Centre (in the Health Sciences Centre.) The event is presented by the McMaster Engineering Society, the Engineering & Society Program, and the Centre for Peace Studies.
