New website helps you explore Hamilton’s natural beauty

Trees have begun changing colour at Spencer Gorge, one of many natural areas easily accessible from McMaster's Westdale campus.

Just in time for the fall colours, a new website will help you get outside and explore the natural beauty in McMaster’s own backyard.

“We really wanted to show how blessed we are,” says Wayne Terryberry, outdoor recreation coordinator in Athletics and Recreation, who led the initiative to develop the site.

Officially launched on Monday, the site showcases the spectacular natural surroundings within easy reach of McMaster’s main campus – everything from trails and vistas to sanctuaries and conservation areas.

Physical fitness, relaxation and stress management – not to mention better concentration and learning skills – are some of the many benefits of taking a time-out in nature.

The site was created as one central information point for the often-hidden natural resources available in the near vicinity. With more than 120 waterfalls in the area, Hamilton is known as “the waterfall capital of Canada.” And the Niagara Escarpment is classified by UNESCO as a World Biosphere Reserve.

Another reason the site was created is to encourage students to take part in research activities and placements out in nature. “There are so many academic areas – for example, history, geography, biology, psychology – that can be related to the study of nature,” says Terryberry.

New posters, featuring stunning photographs of natural scenes in and around Hamilton, now adorn the walls of buildings around campus. In the near future, Terryberry hopes to encourage members of the McMaster community to submit their own photos. The new site also includes information on accessibility for those with mobility needs.

The Nature@McMaster project has received funds from the President’s Office, the President’s Advisory Committee on Natural Lands, and Forward with Integrity.
