Professor Ahmed Shafiqul Huque makes a point of keeping in touch with many of his former students.

The Chair of the Department of Political Science at McMaster University has taught in a number of countries around the world, and those former students serve as a constant reminder of the value of an education.

“They work in governments and the private sector, with NGOs, and some are doing exciting research in universities and think tanks,” he says. “I love knowing about their work and accomplishments”.

It is his strong belief in the power of education that led Dr. Huque and spouse Yasmin to establish one of the University’s newest bursaries.

The Huque Family Bursary was established in the belief that all students should have the opportunity to pursue their educational goals.

The award will be granted to Political Science students who demonstrate financial need. Preference will be given to international students.

“I have spent time at several universities, but McMaster feels like home,” says Dr. Huque, who specializes in public administration and governance in developing countries. “Yasmin and I are very happy to be able to make a contribution to this great institution.”

Dr. Huque points to the diversity of talent found in the Department of Political Science and the Faculty of Social Sciences as one of the many reasons students are attracted to the university.

“We have world-class researchers and excellent teachers in the department,” he says. “If this award helps even one student gain access to the educational resources at McMaster every year, then it will have been well worth the gift.”
