A 2012 orientation survey of 1,030 first-year students indicated that students wanted more information about workload, time management and effective study skills.

  • 39% reported having difficulty transitioning from secondary school/college to university
  • 34% said they were struggling in at least two courses six weeks into the semester

As a result, orientation programs have shifted to focus more on academic skills and transition beginning with SOAR (Summer Orientation for Academic Readiness) in July and continuing through Welcome Day, Welcome Week, and Fall Learning and Orientation Weeks (FLOW) which extend into October.
