Last week the Faculty of Humanities hosted the inaugural Welcome Dinner for Level 1 Students.

The event was organized jointly by the Faculty of Humanities and the McMaster Humanities Society as a way to welcome first-year students to the Faculty and to help create new connections.

“The purpose of the dinner, aside from welcoming new students to our Faculty, was to provide a context for friendly exchanges between professors, academic staff, senior students and new students,” says Anna Moro, Associate Dean of the Faculty of Humanities. “The idea was for new students to meet and to have conversations with members of our Humanities community with whom they might not otherwise cross paths, and to do so over a meal. Conversations like these are rarely possible during course-related activities.”

To help encourage introductions, Level one students were mixed with faculty members, academic advisors and student leaders at different dinner tables. One of those student leaders, Sadaf Rahmanian from the McMaster Humanities Society, was essential in organizing the event.

“It was so nice to meet members of the Humanities community outside of the classroom,” said Sadaf. “I feel that the first year students that attended connected with student leaders, faculty and staff in a meaningful way.”

Creating meaningful connections and new memories that will last through a few years of McMaster undergrad and beyond are what the Welcome Dinner for Level 1 Students is all about.
