Emma Mogus, a first-year Chemical and Physical Sciences student, was only 12 years old when she cofounded Books with No Bounds with her sister Julia. It is a non-profit, volunteer-based program that distributes books and other learning tools to improve reading and literacy skills among Indigenous youth in Canada and around the world.

To date they have collected and shipped 200,000 books to Indigenous communities in Canada, India, Ghana, Pakistan, Congo and most recently Nunavut.

“Look at what you love to do and see how you can use that to change an issue that you’re passionate about,” says Mogus.

“For my sister and I, it was ultimately about taking our love of reading and using it to help kids that didn’t have access to books.”

Mogus has been nominated for the Samara Every Day Political Citizen award. Listen to the interview with Metro Morning, skip to 20:45 to hear her story.
