McMaster swimmers break three OUA records during weekend action

Fourth-year student Alexandra Van Ommen delivered an OUA record-setting swim in the 100-metre breaststroke with a time of 1:10.41 at the 2013 OUA swimming championships. The competition took place on Saturday at the University of Toronto.


Despite a snowstorm that closed campus, University teams had competitions to attend, including OUA Championship events in swimming and women’s fencing.

The McMaster swim teams traveled to the University of Toronto for three days of competition, and had a fantastic showing. The men’s team took the silver medal in team standings, behind the hosts from Toronto, while the Mac women came in third-place overall to bring home the team bronze, behind Toronto and OUA champion Western.

The weekend saw 15 McMaster team records shattered, and Mac swimmers also set three new OUA standards. The OUA record-setting swims came from Alexandra Van Ommen in the 100-metre breaststroke; Konrad Bald in the 50-metre breaststroke; and the 200-metre freestyle relay team of Sarah Taylor, Emma Mittermaier, Meg Sloan, and Emily Fung. It was Employee Appreciation day as the Marauders basketball teams welcomed the McMaster Employee Spirit Society for its annual basketball event and they rewarded faithful fans with a pair of wins over the Waterloo Warriors.

The women’s team got 25 points from Hailey Milligan and 24 from Vanessa Bonomo in an 84-69 triumph, while the men’s team had five players in double figures, led by Joe Rocca with 17, to beat the Warriors 81-56.

The basketball teams welcome Lakehead to the Burridge Gym on Feb. 15 and 16 for important games to end the regular season. The Friday and Saturday doubleheaders start at 6 p.m. and will impact where the Marauders finish in the league standings.

At the OUA women’s fencing championship hosted at Brock University, Marauder Jennifer Akerman won the individual Gold medal in the foil, while leading McMaster to the bronze medal in the team foil competition.

The McMaster volleyball teams traveled to York to close out the conference schedule, and the men’s team suffered its first OUA defeat of the year, losing a 3-0 match to the Lions. The Marauders had already clinched first-place in the OUA and so will host the league Final-Four in the Burridge Gym on Feb. 22 and 23. The Marauders will play at 8 p.m. on the Friday night against an opponent to be determined.

The Mac women’s team dropped a tough 3-2 match to first-place York. The Marauders finish in sixth place in the OUA, and will now move on to play Ryerson in quarter-final playoff action this Saturday, Feb. 16 in Toronto.
