McMaster ranked second greenest university in province

McMaster's Engineering Technology Building is LEED Gold certified, it was unveiled in 2009.


The results are in: a recent global ranking put McMaster at the head of the class when it comes to being green.

The GreenMetric World University Ranking places McMaster second in the province after University of Ottawa and third in the country, after Universite de Sherbrooke and Ottawa U, in terms of its campus sustainability and environmentally friendly university management.

The ranking system first began in 2010 and is organized by Universitas Indonesia with over 400 universities from 65 countries that take part.

Statistics collected from participating institutions include a point system based on setting and infrastructure, energy and climate change, waste, water, transportation, and education.

Overall, McMaster was ranked 42nd in the world, up from 66th in 2014.

The McMaster community including students, faculty and staff have worked hard and collaborated with Facility Services in implementing initiatives that have achieved great success,” said Mohamed Attalla, McMaster’s Assistant Vice-President and Chief Facilities Officer.

“Initiatives such as Chasing the Peak and Shut the Sash have received great support by the University community.”

The University of Nottingham in the UK was ranked first.

In recent years, McMaster has implemented a number of energy-saving measures including HVAC system upgrades and energy management systems that have decreased building energy consumption.

McMaster’s building policy also mandates that all new construction projects meet LEED Silver standards.
