What happens to the brain as we age? Can exercise really help people live longer? How can technology help keep seniors safe in their homes and cars?

These are just a few of the questions that will be discussed at Living Long, Living Well: A Symposium on the Plasticity of Aging, the next event in the Big Ideas, Better Cities series.

The two-and-a half-day event, organized by the McMaster Institute for GeroScience, will highlight the leading-edge interdisciplinary research on aging taking place at McMaster and will explore ways to ensure that our cities and communities have the tools and information they need to help people live longer and better.

The symposium, taking place from Sept. 29-Oct. 1, will feature more than 30 McMaster and international experts and will explore the biological, clinical, economic, social and environmental aspects of healthy aging.

Speakers include Allison Sekuler, professor in McMaster’s Department of Psychology, Behaviour & Neuroscience and acting vice-president, Research, who will talk about the aging brain; and Parminder Raina, director of the McMaster Institute for GeroScience, who will focus on how research is helping people not only live longer, but with purpose and vitality.

The symposium will conclude Thursday, Oct. 1 with a public talk featuring Margaret Trudeau, author of The Time of Your Life: Choosing a Vibrant, Joyful Future. Trudeau will talk about how people can make their later years meaningful and fulfilling. The talk will take place between 7-8 p.m.

All events, including Trudeau’s talk, will take place at the David Braley Health Sciences Centre, located at 100 Main Street West in downtown Hamilton.
