Marauder Weekend promises thrills, chills and plenty of varsity action

Marauder Weekend

Maicee Sorensen (8) and Mira Krunic (12) celebrate another hard-earned point during a recent McMaster women's volleyball match. The pair will compete alongside dozens of other student-athletes as part of Marauder Weekend, Jan. 10-12.

The start of a new year marks a return to competition for McMaster’s varsity teams, and the 27th annual Marauder Weekend is sure to get things off to a rousing start.

The event is a winter homecoming of sorts, as alumni are invited back to connect with former teammates, relive past glories and cheer on the next generation of student-athletes.

The festivities begin Friday, Jan. 10 with a volleyball doubleheader, as the Western University Mustangs visit McMaster. The women’s match is set for 6 p.m. followed by men’s action at 8 p.m.

The McMaster women are in a race for first place in the OUA West, and a win over Western would keep them in contention for the top spot. On the men’s side, the Mustangs have been one of the top rivals for the Marauders in recent years, and pose a threat to McMaster’s undefeated OUA record.

On Saturday, Jan. 11, basketball grabs the spotlight with McMaster student-athletes squaring off against their arch-rivals, the University of Windsor Lancers. The women’s game will begin at 2 p.m., with McMaster facing the defending national champions.

At 4 p.m., the first-place McMaster men will also take on the Lancers, who trail McMaster by one game in the standings. Fans can anticipate an intense battle, as the Marauders fight to defend their home court against the talented visiting team.

It’s back to volleyball on Sunday, Jan. 12, and another clash for first place. The McMaster women will play the University of Windsor Lancers at 1 p.m. with the winner gaining the advantage in the race for first place. The Marauder men will wrap-up the weekend against the Lancers at 3 p.m., directly following the women’s match.

Sunday will also feature the annual Marauder Scholars Brunch, when more than 200 McMaster student-athletes will be recognized for their outstanding academic performance. The ceremony will begin at 10:30 a.m. at the University Club.

All Marauder Weekend games will take place in Burridge Gymnasium. Click here for tickets, and make sure to follow @McMasterSports on Twitter.
