McMaster’s next dean of Social Sciences is a renowned and highly respected health economist and the University’s chair of economics. The board of governors confirmed Jeremiah Hurley’s appointment Thursday. His term begins November 15.

“Jerry Hurley is a wonderful choice to be the next dean of Social Sciences,” says Susan Denburg, McMaster’s acting provost and vice-president academic. “His service as a professor, as a researcher and department chair and his commitment to the Faculty and University are strong foundations as he begins this new leadership role.”

Hurley succeeds Charlotte Yates who was appointed provost at the University of Guelph in August. Roy Cain has served as acting dean since her departure.

“The Faculty of Social Sciences is home to exceptional students and the finest faculty and staff who make a real difference in our community, our country and the world,” Hurley says. “This is an exciting time for Social Sciences at McMaster, one that sees us move to the new Wilson Hall and includes deepened relationships with our community and our colleagues.”

Hurley earned his bachelor’s degree in economics at John Carroll University in Cleveland, Ohio and his master’s and Ph.D. in economics at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He arrived at McMaster in 1988, appointed as an assistant professor in the department of Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics.

In 2000, he was appointed professor in the department of Economics and named chair in 2011. His service includes leadership roles in the Centre for Health Economics and Policy Analysis, membership in the Canadian Institutes of Health Research Institute Scientific Advisory Board and with the board of directors of the Canadian Association of Health Services and Policy Research. He is frequently called upon to provide expert advice and guidance as a member of many provincial health care task forces and committees.
