Using the science of memory, attention and learning to improve education is the focus of a symposium that will draw researchers from across North America to McMaster Aug. 11 and 12.

The McMaster Symposium on Education & Cognition, or EdCog, is organized by Joe Kim, an innovative educator and researcher in McMaster’s Department of Psychology, Neuroscience and Behaviour.

Kim teaches popular introductory psychology classes where he applies research from the science of teaching and learning, including findings developed in his Applied Cognition in Education lab.

The workshops and lectures of the symposium, to be held in the Michael DeGroote Centre for Learning and Discovery, cover such topics as effective note-taking, methods for improving concentration and comprehension, and improving testing methodologies and the mechanisms of learning.

Researchers from McMaster, UCLA, Kent State, the University of New Hampshire and elsewhere are set to appear at the symposium.
