Gaining a better understanding of the demographic profile of McMaster’s faculty is a key goal of a new working group formed by the University’s provost. David Wilkinson says measuring McMaster’s progress in diversifying the faculty, particularly in regards to the career trajectories of women, is an essential next step.

“Over the past few years steps have been taken to identify and overcome some of the roadblocks facing women in academic careers and I believe McMaster has helped create an environment that supports a diversified faculty,” he says. “But now is also the time to take stock of where we stand and identify any new or emerging challenges,” he says.

Charlotte Yates, McMaster’s dean of social sciences will lead the group that includes representatives from across campus. Determining how the University is faring ensuring equal career opportunities is a top priority.

“In 1990, a McMaster task force made many recommendations on the integration of women faculty,” says Yates. “The provost has asked us to chart the progress made since that time, while identifying the areas where work remains,” she says.

The working group will also try to identify any policies and procedures that could be seen as contributing to inequities.

“It is important we all work together to ensure workplace equality and remain focused on building an inclusive and welcoming campus,” Yates says.

Among the group’s first tasks will be to encourage faculty to participate in a survey that will be circulated shortly. The group will report its findings and recommendations in July.
