Whether you're new to campus or returning to McMaster, Graduate Student Week offers a little something for everyone. Check out the full schedule of events below, and don't forget to register where necessary.


McMaster’s graduate student community will mark the beginning of the fall term with Graduate Student Week, featuring an eclectic mix of activities open to more than 4,000 students.

The events have been coordinated by the School of Graduate Studies, the Graduate Students Association and the McMaster Institute for Innovation and Excellence in Teaching and Learning (MIIETL), in partnership with the Student Success Centre.

Tuesday, Sept. 2

Welcome Breakfast for New Graduate Students

Masters and PhD students new to the University in 2014 are invited to this annual event. Check your email for details and registration information.

Graduate Resource Fair

Time: 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Location: Tent B in front of JHE

More than 40 groups and services from McMaster and beyond will share information with the graduate community. Learn more about the university libraries, research ethics, McMaster’s alumni, sustainability on campus, student wellness and so much more!

In Conversation with author Richard Wagamese

Time: 5 to 7 p.m.

Location: Tent A in front of JHE

PhD candidate Kaitlin Debicki facilitates a casual and intimate evening with Richard Wagamese, author of award-winning Indian Horse and the recently published, Medicine Walk. Purchase books on site or bring your books to be signed while enjoying a complimentary reception.

Wednesday, Sept. 3

Teaching and Learning Forum

Time: 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

The McMaster Institute for Innovation and Excellence in Teaching and Learning (MIIETL) offers a half-day of concurrent sessions for graduate students, graduate student TA’s and undergraduate TA’s. The sessions cover a wide range of topics, including:

  • Creating Safe and Open Tutorial Environments
  • What I Wish I Knew Before I Began TAing
  • Inclusion in the Classroom @ McMaster: Accessibility and Accommodation in Teaching
  • Visual Teaching and Learning: Techniques for Cracking Writing Blocks and Tutorial Chokes
  • Marking Labs and Assigned Problems
  • And more!

Thursday, Sept. 4

International Grad Student Fair

Time: 4 to 6 p.m.

Location: Council Chambers (Room 111) in Gilmour Hall

Learn more about graduate school at McMaster – and life beyond the campus gates – from fellow international students!
Returning international grad students offer great advice and tips to help you with the ins and outs of your new locale! The International Fair is a great opportunity to meet new friends, while enjoying some free snacks! Register online. < https://internationalgradstudentfair.eventbrite.ca>

The Fair is being organized by the Graduate Student Association (GSA), CUPE 3903, and the School of Graduate Studies.

Friday, Sept. 5

GSA Free Barbecue for graduate students

Time: 12 Noon to 5 pm

Location: The Phoenix Bar and Grill

Madness and Wellness in Grad School: A Peer Support Hangout to Decrease Isolation!

Time: 10:30 am to Noon

Meet other grad students with mental health disabilities to start developing a support network and community on campus of and for folks with similar experiences. Discuss fears, worries and barriers related to being a grad student who experiences mental health concerns. Share strategies for accessing accommodations in coursework and TA-ships, staying well/not going more crazy than you’d like during stressful times, challenging discrimination in your classes.

Graduate Student Recognition Awards

Time: 2:30 to 4:30 pm

Location: CIBC Hall, McMaster University Student Centre

Join us for this year’s celebration of McMaster graduate student community.
