Graduate researchers show their creative flair
Bold strokes, brilliant palettes and fibre creations were on display at the Gallery of Graduate Arts this week.
Artists from across the graduate community – students, postdoctoral fellows and faculty – inspired Gallery visitors with their paintings, sketches, handknit articles, and sculpture – and shared stories of what inspired their creations.
Medical sciences PhD candidate Yasmeen Mezil is the creative force behind the Gallery. After participating in another student-led art initiative last year, Mezil was determined to continue the tradition for graduate researchers who wanted to flex their artistic muscles.
“I felt so amazing after taking part in the Amateur Art Exhibition. It was wonderful to see so many graduate student researchers be a part of that event,” Mezil says.
Fellow medical sciences PhD student – and artist – Sonia Padwal offered to help make the Gallery a reality, co-organizing the event with Mezil.
The Gallery of Graduate Arts is funded through SPICES (Student Proposals for Intellectual Community and Engaged Scholarship), a Graduate Studies program that encourages and supports students to lead community-building projects.
