COVER: Life Saver

The McMaster Nuclear Reactor produces life-saving medical therapeutics. It helps date ancient archaeological artifacts. It’s used to inspect turbine blades in most of North America’s commercial aircraft. But the MNR is perhaps best known as a major supplier of the radioisotope iodine-125, used in the treatment of prostate cancer. Just ask alumnus Alan Switzer ’72.

A Champion for the Student Experience

Sean Van Koughnett joined the University in 2013 as associate vice president, students and learning, and dean of students. His portfolio oversees the entire student experience outside the classroom, from recruitment, registration and financial aid to student residential life, athletics and the Student Success Centre.

McMaster at War: Second World War

This past June marked the 70th anniversary of the Allied D-Day landings that changed the course of the Second World War. In this in-depth feature, McMaster historians, alumni and staff look back on the University’s lasting connections to the war. The first half of this feature, covering the First World War, was published in the Spring 2014 edition of the Times.

The New World of Work

It’s a strange world of work out there. Long gone are the days of choosing a discipline, mastering it and transferring those skills to a long and singular career with clear goals and expectations. More than ever, students are expected to blend critical thinking, advanced research, technology and experiential learning into their academic development.

Then & Now

Esteemed alumna Ruth McGuirl ’95 is a federal crown prosecutor with a penchant for global travel. Michael Forsyth ’14 is a recent graduate with a budding career in marketing at PepsiCo. The pair of former McMaster valedictorians sat down at Convocation Hall to swap stories, share ideas and reminisce about their time on campus.

McMaster Writes, a popular feature in the Times alumni magazine, has been moved to a new home on the Daily News. Check out the latest group of alumni authors here.
