Dean of science to be new VP research at Western

John Capone, McMaster's dean of science, has been appointed vice-president, research at Western University.


Western University has announced the appointment of John Capone as its new vice- president, research. Capone is currently serving his second term as McMaster’s dean of science.

“McMaster has provided me with incredible opportunities to explore my own research and to lead a Faculty that is committed to innovation and to creating opportunities for students and researchers across all of its disciplines,” said Capone. “It has been a privilege and an honor to be a part of the McMaster community over the years. I’ll certainly miss the faculty, staff and students who have made that success possible but I am looking forward to the exciting new challenge of leading the research enterprise at Western.”

“Western has made a wonderful choice. On behalf of McMaster I extend our thanks for all that John has contributed to the University,” said McMaster President Patrick Deane. “We will miss his vision and his ability to put the people and programs in place to turn that vision into true advances at McMaster.”

A graduate of McMaster’s PhD program, Capone joined the University as an assistant professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Biomedical Sciences in 1986. He was appointed a full professor in 1995 and from 1997 to 2000 served as chair of the department. Prior to becoming dean in 2005, he was associate dean, research, in the Faculty of Health Sciences.
