of Science
, Peter
Sutherland
has decided it's time for a change. He has announced that
he will complete his second term as dean one year early.

“It wasn't an easy decision,” says Sutherland who has held
the office since 1996. “Being dean during a time of enormous change and
working with such inspiring faculty, staff and students has been a wonderful
part of my career. But it's time to rebalance my personal and work life.
I want to do more teaching and explore new research and other opportunities
at McMaster.”

Sutherland arrived at McMaster in 1976 as an assistant professor. He served
as chair of the Department of Physics (now the Department
of Physics & Astronomy
) from 1987 through to 1991 and was also a member
of the budget committee.

Provost Ken Norrie
says, “Peter has always been a valuable member of the University’s
senior management team. During his tenure as dean he has overseen a dynamic
renewal program that has brought new faculty to the University, developed innovative
programs for students, and revitalized space for teaching and learning. I look
forward to continuing to work with Peter as he moves into this next phase of
his career at McMaster.”

Sutherland’s resignation takes effect on June 30, 2005. Norrie hopes
that Senate will approve the formation of a dean selection committee later this
fall.
