Marauders Rugby player Chad Strapp will join Team Canada when it travels to Brazil for the World University Rugby Sevens Championship this August.

The fourth-year scrum-half was among the 12 players named to the national team by Rugby Canada July 11.

McMaster’s men’s rugby head coach Dan Pletch said he believes Strapp is an ideal sevens player, due to his work ethic and physical and technical makeup.

“Chad has worked extremely hard over his time at McMaster, and his versatile skill set, high levels of strength and conditioning and combative nature make him a natural sevens player,” he said. “We wish Chad the best as he goes on to represent McMaster rugby and Canada at the upcoming World Championships.”

Pletch describes the sevens game as “one of the fastest growing sports in Canada,” particularly as it approaches its Olympic debut in 2016.

Rugby Canada considers the World University Championship event to be an evaluation stage for those athletes looking to participate internationally at the senior level.

The men’s competition will run from August 8-10 in the Brazilian city of São José dos Campos.
