How can McMaster research help solve the challenges facing cities in the 21st century?

That’s the focus of Big Ideas, Better Cities, an upcoming series of public events, involving over 60 researchers from all Faculties that will highlight the ways in which McMaster research capacity and excellence can contribute to the creation of healthy, smart, creative communities.*

From September 2015 to April 2016, McMaster will host a number of events in the Hamilton community that will showcase the University’s cutting-edge research and explore the ways in which McMaster research can help cities, both locally and beyond, respond to a range of challenges facing urban communities today.

The result of a series of consultations within the university community and with city officials, each event is being organized by an interdisciplinary team of researchers and will focus on distinct themes including: the impact of aging on society, “big data” and the tools to enable evidence-based decision making, healthy neighbourhoods and the critical role they play in the life of a city, and finally, climate change and its impact on public policy and community health.

“Big Ideas, Better Cities is intended to both celebrate areas of research strength and reinforce the deeply consequential nature of the connections between the University and our local and global communities,” says Susan Searls Giroux, Associate Vice-President, Faculty who is leading this initiative. “We hope these events will serve as a catalyst to engage McMaster’s research community, Hamilton residents, civic leaders, and any number of community partners in this critical dialogue.”

The kick off event will take place on September 11, 2015 at the new David Braley Health Sciences Centre in downtown Hamilton and will feature a public lecture by Stephen Huddart, President and CEO of The J.W. McConnell Family Foundation.

Further details for all events will be available in the coming weeks.
