Author, activist Farley Mowat’s legacy lives on at McMaster

Beloved Canadian author and environmentalist Farley Mowat died Wednesday at the age of 92. Mowat's vast archives were donated to McMaster beginning in 1970.


Canadian literary icon and environmentalist Farley Mowat has died at the age of 92.

Mowat was best known for his books “Never Cry Wolf” and “Lost in the Barrens,” both of which are set in the Canadian wilderness.

A look through the writer’s vast archives, donated to McMaster in a number of installments beginning in 1970, show’s the broad scope of his celebrated career.

The collection includes manuscripts, research materials, fan mail, photos, maps and audio reels from Mowat’s long career.

The archives also contain research diaries and field notes from Mowat’s trips to the Arctic.

Mowat was made and Officer of the Order of Canada in 1981. He was awarded an honorary degree from McMaster in 1994.
