ArcelorMittal Dofasco and McMaster University today introduced the ArcelorMittal Dofasco Chair in Advanced Manufacturing, Dr. Greig Mordue.

The new Chair is a legacy investment of the company’s 100th Anniversary in 2012 when it announced its intention to establish a Research Chair that would make a significant contribution the development on manufacturing policy in Canada.

Dr. Mordue took his post on July 1, 2015 and in addition to being Chair, Advanced Manufacturing Policy is also Associate Professor, jointly appointed with the Department of Economics in the Faculty of Social Sciences and the Walter G. Booth School of Engineering Practice in the Faculty of Engineering at McMaster University.

“We are extremely pleased to see this legacy investment from our 100th anniversary come to fruition and to welcome Dr. Mordue. This Chair was an outcome of a Manufacturing Summit that we hosted in conjunction with the Conference Board of Canada,” said Sean Donnelly, President and CEO, ArcelorMittal Dofasco. “Having this Chair at a research intensive university like McMaster will enhance the profile of manufacturing in Canada as well as be a strong contributor to the manufacturing public policy dialogue with all levels of government. Ultimately, our desire is to ensure Canadian manufacturers are well-positioned to improve their competitiveness, boost productivity and attract foreign direct investment.”

“Greig Mordue brings a wealth of hands-on industry experience to the Faculty of Engineering’s W Booth School of Engineering Practice. We look forward to the evidence-based approach Greig will take to advanced manufacturing policy and the impact it will have within Hamilton, Canada and beyond,” said Ishwar K. Puri, McMaster’s Dean of Engineering.

“Greig Mordue’s cross appointment in the Department of Economics and the Walter G. Booth School of Engineering Practice is a wonderful example of the interdisciplinary approach that is a core strength of McMaster’s education and research excellence. We look forward to seeing the results of this innovative collaboration between the Faculty of Engineering and the Faculty of Social Sciences, ” said Roy Cain, McMaster’s acting Dean of Social Sciences.

“ArcelorMittal Dofasco has given McMaster and the Canadian manufacturing community a foundation from which to sustain and build this crucial sector. My goal as chair is to elevate the importance of manufacturing within Canada and to position McMaster at the centre of advanced manufacturing policy in this country,” said Greig Mordue, ArcelorMittal Dofasco Chair in Advanced Manufacturing.

The announcement marks the official kick-off to Manufacturing Month in Canada, an initiative of the Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters. “The appointment of Dr. Mordue as chair will reinforce the message that manufacturing matters — not just in Hamilton and the province of Ontario, but across Canada,” says Jayson Myers, CME President and CEO, Canadian Manufacturers and Expoprters. “I can’t think of a better way to launch Canadian Manufacturing Month as our future depends on how well we promote Canada’s largest business sector as the industry that will power the economic engine of our nation for the next generation.”
