McMaster alumna and Alumni Gallery member Marnie Spears will be recognized for her leadership in the field of philanthropy Wednesday in Toronto.

Spears, a graduate of the political science program, will be given a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Greater Toronto chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals at the group’s annual awards ceremony.

Currently the president of fundraising consulting firm Ketchum Canada, Spears has long been known as a leader in the field of development.

The Hamilton native previously served as executive director of development and public relations at McMaster, where she helped plan and execute the University’s $90M Centennial Campaign, and was the first president of the Canadian Council for the Advancement of Education.

Spears currently serves as Chair of the McMaster University Foundation and previously was Chair of the Royal Botanical Gardens’ board of directors.

“It’s always exciting when a McMaster graduate and friend is honoured outstanding dedication and accomplishment in their field,” said Mary Williams, vice-president of University Advancement. “Marnie’s accomplishments are many, and this recognition from her peers is clearly deserved.”

The Association of Fundraising Professionals awards celebrate the outstanding contribution of time, leadership and financial support of Canadians who set new benchmarks of excellence in giving and volunteering. This year’s recipients will be honoured.

The association represents 30,000 members in more than 231 chapters in Canada, the United States, Mexico and China, and works to advance philanthropy through advocacy, research, education and certification programs.
