All That Glitters campaign to raise awareness of missing indigenous women
McMaster’s Indigenous Studies Program is hoping to turn leaves into trees Friday.
That’s the day members of the program will host the All That Glitters campaign, selling oak leaf cutouts to raise awareness for missing indigenous women in communities across Canada.
Funds raised from the campaign will go toward planting three trees outside of L.R. Wilson Hall — McMaster’s future home for the Faculties of Humanities and Social Sciences — in honour of missing indigenous women. Once complete, L.R. Wilson Hall will also house the Indigenous Studies Program.
Proceeds from the fundraiser will also go towards erecting memorial plaques in front of the building.
This year’s campaign will take place in the McMaster University Student Centre Marketplace.
Those who donate will receive an oak leaf cutout on which to write their name — or a loved one’s name — as a sign of support for Aboriginal communities and the ongoing efforts to find missing women.
Those who donate to the campaign will also receive a free piece of jewellery courtesy of the Indigenous Studies Program in alliance with the Anti-Violence Network and McMaster Campus Ministries Council.
Organizers hope to reach a fundraising goal of $2,250.
