Philosophy has a curious place in the academy. Virtually every philosopher is closer intellectually to colleagues in other disciplines than to the most distant members of his or her own department.
People with PhDs in philosophy are found in a number of other departments; Political Science, Computer Science, Business, etc.
It is no longer as clear as it once seemed to be that we have distinctive methods, so we will survey this scene and eventually come to focus on the issue of methods.
